Bottom outflows from the Southern Ocean.Antarctic Bottom Water (green) is generated on the shelves of the Weddell Sea, Prydz Bay, Adélie Land and Ross Sea, where it sinks to depth (purple arrows). On moving northwards across the bounds of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (red dashed lines), it mixes with less dense water above to form Antarctic Circumpolar Current bottom water (light pink). Areas shaded in dark pink indicate bottom water less dense than Antarctic Circumpolar Current bottom water. Undiluted Antarctic Bottom Water has been shown to leave the Southern Ocean along Ewing Bank3 and through gaps in the Southwest Indian Ridge (blue arrows). Fukamachi and colleagues2 present measurements over two years of an unusually strong, Deep Western Boundary Current consisting of Antarctic Bottom Water along the Kerguelen Plateau (black contours). Water depths shallower than 3,500 m are shaded in light grey, and shallower than 800 m in dark grey. Land masses are shown in black.
